601 words; about a 3 minute read
Mission:
Silent Inheritance
Location: Science Department :: Arawyn
// LtCmdr Sorvak’s Office //
Amberlyn entered the Science Department at a casual pace, her hands tucked into the side pockets of a lab coat in a pale shade of Fleet-blue. She looked around, a little distracted for the moment, before heading to Cmdr Sorvak’s office.
She tapped on the door frame and smiled as he looked up. “Am I too early?” she asked, referring to the appointment scheduled in about 5 minutes time.
Sorvak looked up from his console, "not at all, doctor. Please come in. Commander Batenburg is on her way as well." He stood and gestured to the chairs across from this desk.
At that moment, Suzanna walked into the Science lab, she looked around for a moment. It brought back many memories, this is where she had started her Starfleet career decades ago. She noticed Amberlyn step into the office, and followed her. "Commander, Doctor," Suzanna nodded in greeting to both and took a seat next to Amberlyn. "As you know, Commander Sorvak, we have been supporting the people on the planet with a vaccination failure in children. Doctor Amberlyn had an important update. I want to make sure we are leveraging all departments in dealing with this. Doctor... all yours.”
“I’ve sent a written report to you, Commander,” Amberlyn added, gesturing to Sorvak, “But in short, it has expanded to being an environmental issue that is, we suspect, in the water supply, dissolving and entering the blood stream of everyone.” She went on to clarify and emphasize a few things about the situation. "The youngest members of the community are being affected first as their vaccines, while present, are unable to compensate or keep up with for the nullifying effects of the polymer. We have addressed the issue to Engineering regarding finding and correcting the source of the situation in the infrastructure of the colony itself. I can’t imagine him doing that fully without the support of your Science people.”
Sorvak listened carefully as Amberlyn explained and nodded, "Understood, Doctor. I was reading your report when you both arrived. I will contact Commander Harlan as well as get our chemical experts to work on finding ways to bind this polymer, and filter it out of the water supply. That will likely need support from Engineering when we are ready for that." He was silent while he considered options. "I will also attempt to fine tune a sensor program to see if we can scan from the ship to see how widespread the pollution is.”
Batenburg nodded. "Good point, you have my full support on that, if you need anyone in Ops to help, just ask. I will make sure they are aware of what you are working and ensure that you have full priority on that from them." Suzanna stated. the sooner they knew of the scope of the pollution, the better. The thought in the back of her mind was, that if it is leaching here.... what about other areas where they had used the same systems.
"Anything else from anyone?" Suzanna asked.
“I’m grateful for your support Cmdr Batenburg, Cmdr Sorvak,” said Amberlyn. "I will keep you both, and Cmdr Harlan, appraised of developments in medical in case that might inform what Science and Engineering are dealing with. Finding something that binds the polymer might help us do the same in the bloodstream,” she nodded to Sorvak.
"Let us find some answers." Suzanna stated.
