Physician’s Log, Supplemental - Novaryn-C #01 – Dr Eliane Morren -
Patient, Talen Videk (age 2 years), shows no improvement after 5 days of treatment on a standard pediatric dose of Genovira. Neither are his symptoms getting worse. However, the overall condition of the child is deteriorating due to intermittent diarrhea, lethargy and lack of appetite. The tremor in the hands persists.”
Three additional pediatric patients presented today with symptomatology consistent with Novaryn-C virus, that observed in my patient last week, Talen Videk (age 2 years). I performed the same diagnostic evaluation on Colina Ballemy (age 4 years, 9 months), her sibling, Edina Ballemy (age 3 years), and Mitch A’Lorca (age 4 years, 5 months), which yielded essentially comparable results.
Laboratory findings indicate that, although the immune systems of these vaccinated children are mounting a recognizable response to the viral pathogen, the response appears insufficient to fully mitigate clinical symptoms or to prevent viral shedding and transmissibility of Novaryn-C virus. This represents a notable change in presentation, as the initial case was not considered contagious at the time of examination.
Additional epidemiological observation and subsequent laboratory findings are that the two other siblings in the Ballemy family, both over the age of 10 years, have remained asymptomatic to date. Their immunization status appears to be providing effective protection against symptomatic infection.
End Log
Dr Morren sat back in her chair and lifted her fresh cup of black brewed cacao and considered her notations. She had consulted the rest of the physician’s board at the clinic, and no one had any suggestions that she had not already thought of and acted upon. A wider inquiry to the Solara Research Center had confirmed that they too had a patient, age 4 years, who’s immune response to the Novaryn-C had failed to protect her. Likewise, she was not improving as would be expected on an extended regimen of Nexovir.
This was a virus formerly common, particularly in childhood, but rarely seen in the past 40 years because of a very effective vaccine program, administered in childhood. Why was the vaccine failing now and why in these children? Dr Morren and Solara had exchanged records and agreed to keep in touch.
The comm's chirp interrupted her reverie. “Eliane Morren,” she answered.
“Doctor Morren. Glad I caught you. Dr Revis from Solara Research.”
“I was just going to comm you,” said Morren.
Revis continued. “We’ve had 3 more reports of children becoming symptomatic with Novaryn-C in the other two clinics in your Province. Low fever, rash on the torso, lethargy, loss of interest in eating and drinking. I think we have a problem. Any luck with the Genovira?”
“No sir,” replied Morren. “He’s not getting worse but not getting better. And I had three more present today. You know there are at least as many children that are not being brought to a physician. We definitely have a problem.”
“Let's figure it out.” Revis became very serious. “The history behind this virus is that within about 7-10 days after symptoms first appear, it takes a nosedive affecting the nervous system, beginning with a tremor in the extremities and progressive loss of motor control… to the point of death,” Revis explained.
“I know,” Morren said.
Revis continued. “I checked with the Health Minister of the Province before comm’ing you. It happens there is a Starfleet ship in orbit, the USS Arawyn. I’m wondering if they have any resources in their medical department, or contacts with the Federation that could help us. I’m going to contact the Captain of that ship and will give you a report as soon as I find out anything.”
“I’ll look forward to hearing from you, Doctor.”
“Revis out.”
Morren terminated the call and took another sip of the cacao. Please. We need a solution. she murmured over the cup.
